Professor T.V.Eachara Varier passed away a few days back after an epic struggle to bring to justice the the people responsible for torturing and killing his son Rajan during the black days of the emergency. Prof. Varier had written a poignant book on his unsuccesful fight for justice (available online from the Asian Human Rights Commission web site):
Many top-level police officers and politicians were involved in the case - none of them were punished. What can the citizens of a country do when the very people who are supposed to uphold the rule of law are its biggest violators?
