Dining Philosophers with Atmega8 and LED's

An interesting project which students can try their hand on is the implementation of tiny operating systems (supporting multithreading and synchronization) for microcontrollers. Anish and friends (my students at GEC Thrissur) had lots of fun doing this. Today they demonstrated a visualization of the dining philosophers problem using LED's - the code runs on an ATmega8 microcontroller. Anish is looking for more interesting visualizations - any ideas?
